Above the Clouds: A Day Hike to Tinjurey, Gangtok’s Hidden Ridge

To mark the first UK show of artist Herni Brande, developers ThemesCamp and German studio schultzschultz have created the Ledge Wooden at Berlin city.

There are journeys in the Himalayas that demand endurance, and then there are those rare walks that ask only for curiosity. When we landed in Gangtok our driver suggested us about a beautiful trek near our stay. The Tinjurey Trek, tucked quietly inside the lush folds of the Phambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary near Gangtok, belongs to the latter category — a gentle Himalayan escape where every turn of the trail feels like a page from an old mountain journal.

The morning begins at the the eco hut tinjure which has a canteen too, about eight kilometres from the bustle of Gangtok town.  The city still stretches lazily beneath drifting clouds while the forest ahead waits in silence. Unlike the dramatic high-altitude expeditions Sikkim is known for, Tinjurey is intimate. It does not overwhelm. Instead, it slowly reveals itself. The route has Sikkim Police and Taj enroute where we will have some food after the trek.

The trail rises steadily through forests scented with damp earth and pine resin. Magnolias lean over the path, maple leaves flicker in the mountain light, and tall Himalayan pines sway with the wind rolling in from the valley. The trek covers roughly four kilometres and takes around two hours one way if you are fit though time feels strangely irrelevant here. One walks slower in forests like these — not out of exhaustion, but because nature insists upon attention.

There are moments when the silence breaks unexpectedly: the rustle of unseen movement in the undergrowth, the distant call of a hill bird, or the sharp flutter of colourful wings overhead. The sanctuary shelters deer, leopards and a remarkable variety of Himalayan birds, though the forest reveals its wildlife only to the patient. More often than sightings, it is the feeling of wilderness that stays with you — that quiet awareness that the mountains are alive beyond the trail.

As the climb steepens in sections, the air grows cooler and thinner. Then, almost suddenly, the forest opens.

At 2,433 metres, Tinjurey Top stands like a secret balcony above East Sikkim. A watchtower crowns the ridge, offering one of the most underrated panoramic views in the region. On one side lies the layered sweep of the Teesta Valley and the clustered rooftops of Gangtok, half-hidden beneath drifting mist. On the other rises the great northern wall of the Himalayas, where the snow-clad peaks of Kangchenjunga dominate the horizon with quiet majesty.

There is something deeply satisfying about eating a packed lunch at the summit after a morning spent climbing through forests. No restaurant view can replicate the taste of simple food eaten in mountain air. Travellers linger here longer than they intend to — taking photographs, listening to the wind, or simply sitting in silence while clouds move across the valleys below.

What makes the Tinjurey Trek memorable is not just the scenery, but its accessibility. In a single day, it offers the essence of the Eastern Himalayas: forest trails, wildlife, mountain panoramas and the meditative stillness that makes Sikkim unforgettable.

By the time you descend back to Gangtok in the evening, the city feels different somehow. Quieter. Smaller. As if the mountains, for a brief few hours, allowed you into one of their hidden rooms.
